Santee River – Barefoot Landing, May 3

We were the only boat at our anchorage last night. It was a very remote place, with marshy grasslands wherever you looked. Perhaps it was because it had been so long since we had anchored, but we thought it was a beautiful spot. There was a very pretty sunset and the stars were brilliant, with no city lights anywhere to be seen.

We used the generator this morning to make coffee and toast and left at 8:45. It was slow going today, against the tide most of the day. Until about 3:45 this afternoon we were only going 5.5– 6.5 mph. After that we were able to get up to 8.2 mph, but only for a while. They back down again

Most of today was spent traveling up a narrow, winding river. There was a lot of traffic today, many speedboats and jet skis. There were also biting flies. The river was lined with trees, all growing in the water. You could see the high water marks on them. You can also see the current.

One section of the river had several very long, new docks built. None were occupied with boats and there were no houses on the other end. We figured these were built in anticipation to selling the lots and none have sold due to the slump in the housing market.

We saw the colorful boat Jungle Princess. We’re not sure if it transports people from one place to another or if it gives tours of the river.

Note the golf green. Bet there’s a lot of golf balls in the river!

According to the sign we are more than halfway to New York!

We docked at 7:00 at Barefoot Landing in Myrtle Beach. A long day – 10 hours 15 minutes, only 66.8 miles.
